Al Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize (seriously) - UPDATED

See here.

While I definitely think things need to be done about the way we treat the environment, and I've blogged about An Inconvenient Truth before, it seems a little weird that Al Gore's work on climate change wins a Nobel Peace Prize.

I don't get it.

UPDATE: Apparently I'm not the only one with this thought. NPR had a bit on it here.

  1. The Nobel Peace Prizes have been handed out to a lot of undeserving folks lately. Last year it was Mohammad Yunus, a banker who did early work in micro-credit lending. It's not that the work Gore or Yunus have done aren't important -- they are quite significant -- but most people think they don't deserve a Nobel Prize. There just aren't many Mother Teresa's or Nelson Mandela's in the world right now, or they aren't being recognized.

However, I must say that I support Gore's receipt of the Peace Prize more than the Academy Award he got last year. That was such a crock. His stupid movie was nothing more than a fancy PowerPoint presentation, and it was factually dubious as well. It was chosen just for the message, which is wholly inappropriate, but par for the Hollywood course.

  3. Peter - but at least his Powerpoint presentation was made using Keynote instead of Powerpoint. ;)
