A nitpicky error in the season finale of The Office

When Michael reluctantly gives Toby his watch during the exit interview, Toby says he'll set the watch for Costa Rica time. From what I can tell, Costa Rica is in the same timezone as Scranton.

*sigh* I'm a nerd.

UPDATE: check the comments for the subsequent drama that has unfolded since I posted this.

  1. Actually, Costa Rica is two hours behind Eastern Daylight Time, the time zone of Scranton, Pennsylvania. If it were not during Daylight Savings Time, Costa Rica would be and one hour behind.

So when the watch went off at the end of the episode, it was presumably 2 hours after the close of the normal business day, assuming that Michael had set the watch alarm for that time.

  2. How did you find that out?? I guesstimated using Google Maps and a time zone chart in my wife's planner.

  4. According to my trusty iPhone, the time zone is currently 2hrs behind. Peter is correct, never trust a planner when you have higher technology! Come on now, you of all people should know that!

  6. I didn't know that stuff off the top of my head. I just Googled "time in Costa Rica." C'mon, Dave, where's your mad ex-Board researching skills?

  7. Rusty, obviously. I Googled "Costa Rica Time Zone" and saw that it was UTC-6.

    No idea what that means.

I found out where exactly Costa Rica was, looked in my wife's planner which said it was in the New York time zone. I figured Scranton is only a couple hours away from New York so...yeah, the iPhone would have been a much better way to go. :)
